Welcome to Fostering NSW

Welcome to Fostering NSW, your one-stop site to learn, think and connect to fostering and adoption today! Please take a look around to find comprehensive information on a range of care options in New South Wales, Australia, including foster care, open adoption and guardianship.

Fostering NSW is a partnership between the NSW Government and non-government out-of-home care agencies. It was initiated by the NSW Government and is managed by the Association of Children’s Welfare Agencies (ACWA), a not-for-profit body representing out-of-home care agencies.

With over 18,000 children and young people unable to live at home we always need more carers. Why do children and young people come into care?

Fostering NSW supports the NSW Safe Home For Life reforms, which place a child’s need for permanency and stability at the heart of all decision-making. These reforms outline a clear set of permanent care alternatives that include guardianship, kinship care and open adoption as well as long-term out-of-home-care (OOHC) or short-term care focused on helping children prepare to return to their families.

Whichever care option is determined to be in the child’s best interest, retaining contact with members of their birth family is an important part of a child or young person’s long-term or permanent care arrangements.

Foster carers and adoptive parents play a vital role in giving children safe and caring homes, helping to change their lives for the better. Foster carers come from all walks of life and there’s no such thing as the ‘perfect’ carer! What you do need is patience, energy and a sense of humour, which can all go a long way towards helping a vulnerable child.

Check out our videos of existing carers sharing their experiences and read stories about what it’s really like be to a carer, a child in care, or a sibling in a foster or adoptive family.
